Differences between Inspector and Tax Assistant Job in CBDT and CBIC

Difference between CBDT and CBIC (earlier CBEC)

The full form of CBDT is – Central Board of Direct Taxes and CBIC full form is Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs which was earlier also called CBEC i.e. Central Board of Excise and Customs.

Both CBDT and CBIC come under the Department of Revenue.

It is clear from the full form of CBDT that it is related to Direct Taxes i.e. Income Tax and that is why the candidates selected in it are posted in the Income Tax Department.

On the other hand, CBIC is associated with Indirect Taxes and Customs and the selected candidates are posted in the GST (formerly known as Excise) and Customs departments.

Which is better in terms of job, CBDT or CBIC?

As you must have seen in the notification of SSC CGL that the commission conducts examination for the post of Inspector and Tax Assistant in CBDT and CBIC.

Therefore, first of all, talking about the Inspector, at present it is better to do a job in either of the two departments.

In the case of work, according to the place of posting and section, sometimes the work is more and sometimes less.

Also, when an Inspector is posted in Customs under CBIC, he has to work according to shift.

CBIC has become better in the matter of promotion of Inspector. Generally a GST Inspector gets his first promotion in 2 to 3 years.

But when it comes to a Tax Assistant, CBDT is better than CBIC. As per new Recruitment Rule of CBIC, the promotion period of Tax Assistant to the post of Senior Tax Assistant has been increased. Now a GST Tax Assistant will get first promotion after ten year from the date of joining.

If compared to the work, then the scope of work of a Tax Assistant of Income Tax is more. Apart from working in the Administration, Establishment and Accounts Section, he also has to do some income tax related work.

On the other hand, generally a GST Tax Assistant has to work related to Administration, Establishment and Accounts Section.

As far as promotion is concerned, a Tax Assistant in the Income Tax Department gets promoted to the next post in about 3 to 4 years.

At the same time, the first promotion of Tax Assistant working in GST will now be in 10 years according to the new recruitment rules and after the next 5 years he will reach the post of Inspector.

In this way, it will take a total of 15 years for a Tax Assistant working in GST to reach the post of Inspector.

Inter Commissionerate Transfer is also good in Income Tax Department compared to CBIC.

Overall, the Income Tax Department is better than the GST for a Tax Assistant.

What is the Salary and Job Profile of a Tax Assistant working in CBIC and CBDT?

Gross Salary of a Tax Assistant in CBIC and CBDT posted in a X class city is approximately Rs.45000/-. So, there is no difference between gross salary of Tax Assistant in both department.

Does the period of promotion of a Tax Assistant working in the Income Tax Department also depend on the zone?

Yes, in some zones this promotion is done only in 2 to 3 years, in some places it takes 4 to 5 years.

Do Tax Assistant and Inspector have to give any departmental exam for promotion in GST?

Departmental examinations are different for Tax Assistant and Inspector in GST.

First of all, if we talk about the Departmental Examination for Confirmation, it is necessary for both the posts.

But where the Confirmation exam for the post of Inspector is held twice a year, the same exam is held once in a year for the post of Tax Assistant.

It is necessary to qualify this confirmation exam to be permanent in the department for both the posts.

As far as the departmental examination for promotion is concerned, it is necessary only for the Tax Assistant.

Tax Assistant has to give a departmental exam to get promoted to the next post i.e. the post of Executive Assistant (Earlier Senior Tax Assistant).

If the Executive Assistant also wants promotion to the post of Inspector, then he also has to give a departmental examination.

But the Inspector has to take the exam only for Confirmation. They do not need to give any kind of departmental examination to get promotion to the next post.

They have to complete only one training which is mandatory to get promotion to the next post. Without completing this training, they cannot be promoted to the next post.

Is the posting of a Tax Assistant working in GST also in the Customs department?

In CBIC, ‘I’ denotes ‘Indirect Taxes’ means GST (Goods and Services Tax) and ‘C’ denotes Customs.

Obviously, those candidates who are selected for CBIC, may be posted in Customs office also.

After the selection of a candidate, the zone is divided according to his State Preference and Marks.

After that the candidates join the respective PCCO / CCO (Principal / Chief Commissioner Office) of that zone. From there they are given posting in any Commissionerate under GST or in Customs.

The first posting of a candidate selected for the post of Inspector is usually given in GST and after a few years he is sent to Customs.

But this is not necessary in the case of Tax Assistant. His first posting may also be in Customs.

How many days and hours in a week do you have to work in GST and Customs?

First let us talk about the working days and hours of the inspector.

A GST Inspector has to work 5 days a week from 9.30 am to 6.00 pm and there are holidays on Saturdays and Sundays.

At the same time, an Inspector working in Customs has to work according to his place of posting.

In some sections in the Customs department, 24 x 7 work is done throughout the week. Therefore shift wise work is done in these sections and accordingly the posting of Inspectors is done.

There are also some sections where there are normal working hours i.e. they have to work 6 days a week from 10.00 am to 5.30 pm and Sunday is a holiday.

As far as working days and hours of Tax Assistant in GST are concerned, like Inspectors, they also have to work 5 days a week from 9.30 am to 6.00 pm and Saturday and Sunday are holidays.

There are normal working hours for Tax Assistant in Customs department i.e. they have to work 6 days a week from 10.00 am to 5.30 pm and Sunday is a holiday.
